If you're planning to sit for engineering entrance tests next year, the National Testing Agency has formally opened the JEE Main 2027 registration portal for Session 1. The official notification landed on October 24, and the application window stays active through late November.
Every single year, I watch students panic over this form. It's predictable. Someone enters their father name with the wrong spelling. Someone else uploads a blurry photo taken against a bedroom wall. And then a few candidates pay the fee twice because their UPI screen froze midway. In my experience, you really don't need that extra headache when you already have HC Verma problems and past question papers staring you down.
NTA changed several parts of the application workflow this time around. Basically, the portal connects directly with the Meri Pehchaan single sign-on system. It pulls your identity records via DigiLocker. On top of that, it insists on a live webcam capture instead of letting you upload an old passport snapshot (annoying, I know). If you want to see how government portals are overhauling authentication across national exams, take a look at our practical tech guides on recent portal updates.
The entire process takes around twenty minutes if you organize your documents in a folder on your desktop beforehand. This walkthrough covers every document you need, how the screens look, and the exact spots where candidates usually get tripped up.
Important dates and fee details
The registration window opened in late October 2026. You can submit your application until November 22, 2026, without penalty charges. But if you miss that cutoff, NTA offers a short grace window until November 26, 2026, though that comes with a ₹500 late fee penalty. Honestly, waiting until the final weekend is a terrible idea anyway. Government exam servers slow down under heavy traffic, and if you ask me, nobody wants a broken payment gateway on deadline night.
Session 1 examinations take place in January 2027 across computer-based test centers in India and abroad. Session 2 happens in April 2027.
NTA lets you pay for Session 1 alone right now, or book both Session 1 and Session 2 in a single payment. If your budget permits, booking both sessions saves you from logging back in during the busy February registration rush. But look, if you want to see how your preparation shapes up first, paying for just Session 1 is completely fine.
The standard fee structure for Indian examination centers is structured as follows:
- General, General-EWS, and OBC-NCL male candidates pay ₹1,000 for one session, or ₹2,000 if applying for both sessions.
- General, General-EWS, and OBC-NCL female candidates pay ₹500 for one session, or ₹1,000 for both sessions.
- SC, ST, and PwD candidates across all genders pay ₹500 for one session, or ₹1,000 for both sessions.
- Candidates choosing exam centers outside India pay ₹4,500 per session for Paper 1.
Payments run through standard Indian banking gateways like State Bank of India and HDFC Bank. Canara Bank is also on the list. You can settle the fee via UPI, RuPay debit cards, credit cards, or net banking. Keep your phone handy. Bank OTPs expire fast.
Eligibility criteria for appearing candidates
Before you spend money on the fee, verify whether your academic background matches what NTA requires. The rules are straightforward. Still, hundreds of queries flood student forums every week about age caps and passing years.
There's no upper age limit for appearing in JEE Main. None at all. You could be seventeen or twenty-five. As long as you cleared your qualifying exam in the approved timeline, you can sit for the test.
The academic timing rule is strict:
- You must have passed your Class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination in 2025 or 2026.
- Students currently appearing for their Class 12 board examinations in 2027 are also fully eligible.
- If you passed your Class 12 board exams in 2024 or earlier, you cannot appear for JEE Main 2027. You get three consecutive attempts starting from your board passing year.
Your subject combination on your board marksheet matters just as much. For Paper 1 (B.E. and B.Tech), you must have taken Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, alongside any one subject among Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, or a Technical Vocational subject. For Paper 2A (B.Arch), you need Physics and Mathematics, plus Chemistry.
While JEE Main itself has no minimum board percentage requirement to write the exam, admission for NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, or other central institutes requires at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (or 65% for SC and ST candidates). I think students often mix up these two rules. If you're exploring educational grants alongside engineering entrance prep, read our Azim Premji Scholarship registration guide for another option supporting undergraduate study.
Documents you must prepare beforehand
Don't open the application portal until you have every required document saved in a single folder on your computer. Trust me on this. Hunting for an Aadhaar OTP while a session timer counts down on screen is a fast way to make clerical blunders.
NTA requires digital copies of specific records, and their upload validation scripts reject files that deviate from size limits:
- Aadhaar card details or an active DigiLocker account linked with your mobile number.
- Class 10 marksheet or certificate, which NTA uses as official proof for your legal name, parents' names, and date of birth.
- Class 12 marksheet (if you already passed in 2025 or 2026) or your board roll number if you are appearing in 2027.
- Scanned copy of your signature on clean white paper using black ballpoint ink, sized between 4 KB and 30 KB in JPG or JPEG format.
- Category certificate for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, or Gen-EWS applicants, sized between 50 KB and 300 KB in PDF format. Central OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be valid for the current financial year.
- PwD or UDID disability certificate in PDF format (50 KB to 300 KB) if applicable.
- A working laptop webcam or front-facing smartphone camera for the real-time identity snapshot.
Make sure your scanned signature is crisp and readable. Don't photograph your signature under dim room light with shadows falling across the paper. In my experience, NTA automated screening flags messy signatures and puts forms on hold.
Step-by-step registration process on the NTA portal
The application takes place entirely online at jeemain.nta.nic.in. If you ask me, you should steer clear of third-party websites offering application links. There are plenty of sketchy phishing clones that mimic the NTA layout during peak registration periods, and they look convincing.
Step 1: Create your login via Meri Pehchaan
- Navigate to the official portal at jeemain.nta.nic.in using an updated web browser on your computer.
- Click on the prominent banner on the homepage that reads JEE Main 2027 Registration Session 1.
- The browser redirects you to the authentication gateway. You will see a login box featuring the national single sign-on platform, Meri Pehchaan.
- Select your preferred identification mode. You can log in through your existing DigiLocker credentials, your Academic Bank of Credits ID, or directly enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and click request OTP. You will receive a 6-digit one-time password on the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar card via UIDAI.
- Type in the OTP and submit. The system authenticates your basic identity and displays a screen showing your name, gender, and date of birth fetched directly from government records.
- Create a secure password containing at least eight characters, including an uppercase letter, a number, and a special character, then select a security question and submit the registration form.
- Your temporary application number appears on screen in bold black text, and an SMS arrives on your phone confirming account creation. Write this application number down in a notebook immediately.
Step 2: Fill in personal and academic information
- Log in using your new application number and password. The system takes you to the main dashboard displaying four circular progress badges: Registration, Application Form, Fee Payment, and Confirmation.
- Click on the button labeled Complete Application Form.
- Review your personal details screen. Because you logged in through Meri Pehchaan, your full name, date of birth, and gender remain locked based on your official Aadhaar data.
- Fill in your father name, mother name, nationality, state of eligibility, category, and whether you require a scribe under PwD provisions.
- Enter your complete residential address, including your district, state, and PIN code.
- Provide your primary email address and an alternate mobile number. NTA sends all admit card alerts here, so use an active personal inbox rather than an internet cafe email address.
- Move to the qualification details section. Select whether you passed or are appearing in Class 12, choose your school board from the dropdown list, enter your school name, and provide your board roll number if already allotted.
Step 3: Upload files and capture your live photo
- Click save and next to enter the upload window. This year, NTA requires a live webcam photograph captured in real time.
- Look for the camera box on screen. The browser will trigger a popup near the address bar asking for permission to use your camera. Click allow.
- Sit upright in a well-lit room facing the camera directly against a plain white background. Do not wear sunglasses, caps, or heavy scarves.
- Align your face within the green oval outline displayed on screen. Once the framing sensor detects proper positioning, click the Capture Photo button.
- Review the preview image. If the snapshot looks sharp and both your ears are clearly visible, click confirm. If it looks dark or blurry, click retake.
- Scroll down to the signature section. Click choose file, select your cropped signature image (under 30 KB), and click upload.
- Upload your category certificate or PwD certificate in PDF format if prompted, then click save and next.
Step 4: Select paper and examination cities
- On the exam details screen, tick the checkboxes for the papers you want to write. You can pick Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech, Paper 2A for B.Arch, or Paper 2B for B.Planning.
- Choose your question paper medium. You can select English, Hindi, or any of the 11 regional languages supported by NTA, including Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Note that regional languages are only available at exam centers located within their respective states.
- Select your exam city choices. The form asks you to rank four preferred test cities in order of priority. The portal automatically lists cities based on your present and permanent address states.
Step 5: Pay the application fee and download receipt
- Click review application. A full summary screen opens displaying every detail you entered, along with your captured photo and signature.
- Check every spelling, roll number, and category selection carefully. Tick all declaration boxes acknowledging that the information is accurate.
- Click final submit. Once you press this, you cannot edit your core particulars until the correction window opens weeks later.
- Click pay examination fee. The screen presents payment gateway aggregators such as SBI ePay, HDFC, and Canara. Pick any aggregator; you do not need an account with that specific bank to use their gateway.
- Choose UPI on the payment gateway screen. Scan the dynamic QR code using Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or your bank UPI app, and approve the transaction on your phone.
- Wait for the gateway to redirect you automatically. Do not refresh your browser or hit the back button while the payment screen shows a processing wheel.
- Once the payment succeeds, the system redirects you to your dashboard where the Confirmation badge turns green. Click Download Confirmation Page.
Common registration mistakes and how to avoid them
Every registration cycle, thousands of candidates run into avoidable trouble simply because they rush through the online forms. The numbers here are a bit fuzzy, but I see this happening especially when students delegate the entire submission to a local cyber cafe operator.
That cyber cafe operator is probably handling fifty forms in an afternoon. It's a mess. They make typos in mother names. They accidentally select the wrong category. Or they simply plug in their own shop phone number. When the admit card releases or an urgent OTP arrives, the candidate has no access to the messages. Sit beside the operator and check every detail they type. Or better yet, complete the form yourself from home.
Another frequent hurdle involves name discrepancies. If your Aadhaar card spells your name slightly differently from your Class 10 marksheet, the Meri Pehchaan automatic verification flags a mismatch right away. If you notice a spelling error on your Aadhaar card today, update it at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra immediately before linking it to the NTA portal.
Similar verification protocols apply across major Indian competitive tests, as detailed in our CTET 2026 online registration guide, where automated identity matching has replaced manual offline checks.
Never share your Aadhaar OTP, password, or banking credentials with third parties or unofficial telegram channels claiming they can guarantee exam center allocations or bypass portal verification errors.
If your money gets deducted from your bank account but the NTA portal continues to show your payment as pending, don't panic. Banking servers take up to twenty-four hours to reconcile electronic transactions. Check your bank statement first to confirm whether the amount was debited. If the status doesn't update after a day, you can initiate a second payment. That earlier duplicate amount gets refunded back to the source account within five to seven working days.
Watch out for fake portals and fraudulent payment links circulating on WhatsApp and social media. You can check our cyber safety alert archive to recognize how scammers clone government examination interfaces to harvest candidate details and steal UPI payments.
What happens after you submit the form
Once you download the confirmation document, save three separate copies. Keep one on your computer and another on cloud storage like Google Drive or DigiLocker. Then keep a physical printed copy safely with your school marksheets. You'll need this physical printout during engineering counseling rounds months down the road.
NTA will open a brief application correction window in early December 2026. This window allows you to modify non-identity fields like your exam city preferences, educational marks, photo uploads, or your uploaded signature if NTA flagged an issue. But you won't be allowed to change your primary mobile number or email address. Your Aadhaar-linked name stays locked, too.
Exam city intimation slips usually release around the second week of January 2027. That tells you which city you'll travel to. Hall tickets and admit cards arrive roughly three to four days before the examination date on the official website. In my experience, keeping your login credentials written down in a safe diary means you won't scramble for them on exam morning.
