I know how stressful exam season gets in India. The SBI Clerk Notification 2026 is officially out, and if you're looking to secure a government banking job this year, this is your moment. But there's a catch you need to know about straight away.
This isn't a general recruitment drive. The State Bank of India released this specific notification for 1,538 backlog vacancies. That means these posts are specifically reserved for SC, ST, and OBC candidates. If you're in the general category, you'll just have to wait for the regular notification cycle. The application window is open from August 7 to August 27, 2026. Honestly, I've seen too many students wait until the last day, only to have the SBI server crash on them. Don't be that person. You need to get your documents ready and fill the form out as soon as possible. Government bank jobs have great stability. And missing out because of a tech glitch? That's just a waste.
Who is eligible for the SBI clerk 2026 backlog posts
Before you even open the website, check if you actually qualify. The rules are strict. The bank won't make exceptions for anyone. First, you need a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized university. If you're in your final year or semester, you can apply conditionally. But you must prove you passed your graduation on or before the document verification date. A lot of students get confused here (which makes sense, actually). Your university must declare the result before that specific date. A letter from your college principal won't work if the result isn't officially out.
Age limit is the next big hurdle. You need to be between 20 and 28 years old. Since this is a special drive for SC, ST, and OBC candidates, the standard age relaxations apply. That means 5 years extra for SC and ST candidates. This pushes the upper limit to 33 years. For OBC non-creamy layer candidates, you get 3 years. That brings the limit to 31 years.
You also need to know the local language of the state you're applying from. You have to read, write, speak, and understand it. If you studied the local language in 10th or 12th standard and have the mark sheet to prove it, you won't have to take the language test. Otherwise, prepare for a local language proficiency test before joining. If you fail this test, your selection is cancelled. It's that simple. So apply from a state where you actually know the language.
Documents you need before starting registration
Gathering your documents beforehand saves you from timing out during the online application. The portal will log you out if you take too long. Then you'll have to start over. Keep these ready on your computer or phone.
- A recent passport-size photograph on a light background. Keep the file size between 20KB and 50KB. Do not use a selfie or a photo with a busy background.
- Your signature on white paper with black ink. Size should be 10KB to 20KB. Use black ink. Blue ink sometimes does not scan clearly.
- A left thumb impression on white paper with black or blue ink. Size between 20KB and 50KB. Wash your hands before doing this so the ridges are clear.
- A handwritten declaration. This must be written in English by you, on white paper with black ink. The exact text is in the official PDF. Do not write it in capital letters. A lot of forms get rejected because people write the whole thing in caps.
- Your Aadhaar card or PAN card for identity verification details.
- Your 10th and 12th mark sheets, plus your graduation certificate to fill in the marks.
- Your caste certificate if you are claiming reservation benefits. For OBC candidates, make sure you have the latest non-creamy layer certificate.

Step-by-step guide to apply for SBI clerk 2026
The official website can be confusing, especially on a mobile phone. I highly suggest using a desktop or a laptop for this. Follow these exact steps to fill out your form without making mistakes.
- Open your web browser and go to the official SBI website at sbi.co.in or bank.sbi. Go to the "Careers" tab at the top right corner. Do not use third-party websites claiming to offer direct links.
- Look for the section called "Current Openings" under the Join SBI heading. Find the link that says "Recruitment of Junior Associates (Customer Support & Sales) - Special Recruitment Drive".
- Click on "Apply Online". A new page will open. Click the yellow button that says "Click here for New Registration" at the top right.
- Enter your basic details. This includes your first name, middle name, last name, mobile number, and email ID. Double check your mobile number because SBI will send your registration number and password via SMS.
- Click Save and next. The system will give you a provisional registration number and password. Write this down on a piece of paper immediately. Do not rely entirely on the SMS or email, as they can sometimes get delayed.
- Upload your scanned photograph and signature. Make sure they meet the size limits I mentioned earlier. If the photo is blurry, your form will be rejected.
- Fill in your detailed information. This includes your category, religion, nationality, and the state you want to apply for. Choose your exam center carefully because you cannot change it later. You will need to select centers for both the prelims and the mains.
- Enter your educational qualifications. Add your graduation details, year of passing, and percentage marks. If your university gives CGPA, convert it to a percentage according to their rules. Rounding off is not allowed. 59.99 percent is less than 60 percent.
- Preview your application. This is your last chance to fix any spelling mistakes. Check every single spelling against your Aadhaar card and 10th mark sheet. Read every line twice.
- Upload your left thumb impression and handwritten declaration. Make sure the files are clear and readable.
- Pay the application fee. For SC, ST, PwBD, and ESM candidates, there is no fee. For OBC candidates, the fee is usually INR 750. You can pay using UPI, internet banking, or a debit card. I recommend using internet banking or a card, as UPI payments sometimes get stuck on banking portals and cause unnecessary stress.
- Download the final application PDF and the fee receipt. Save these securely on your Google Drive or DigiLocker. You will need them when you are called for document verification. Do not just take a screenshot. Download the actual files.
Understanding the exam pattern and syllabus
The selection process is straightforward. It consists of an online preliminary exam and an online main exam.
The prelims are just a qualifying test. You'll face 100 objective questions across three sections. English Language has 30 questions. Numerical Ability has 35 questions. And Reasoning Ability has 35 questions. You have one hour in total, with 20 minutes fixed for each section. For every wrong answer, you lose 0.25 marks. Basically, the trick here is speed and accuracy. You can't afford to get stuck on a single math problem.
If you clear the prelims, you take the main exam. This one is tougher. It decides your final merit ranking. It has 190 questions worth 200 marks. The sections are General/Financial Awareness, General English, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude. You get 2 hours and 40 minutes here. The same negative marking applies. Honestly, General awareness is where people usually score the highest or fail completely. Read the newspaper daily for this section.
There's no interview for the clerk post. If you clear the mains and the local language test, you get the job. It's purely based on your written exam performance.
Common mistakes to avoid during application
I've seen candidates make silly errors that cost them a whole year of preparation. Don't let this happen to you.
The biggest mistake is uploading a blurry signature or photograph. The system will accept the file if the size is right, but a human will reject it later. Check the preview carefully. If you can't read your own handwriting in the declaration image, nobody else can either.
Writing the declaration in capital letters is another guaranteed rejection. Just write it in normal running handwriting.
Entering the wrong category is fatal. If you apply as OBC but don't have a valid non-creamy layer certificate for the current financial year, you'll be disqualified at the document verification stage. They won't shift you to the general category in this special drive because there are no general category posts. Your application will simply be thrown out.
Waiting until the last day is dangerous. The SBI website is notorious for crashing when thousands of people try to submit applications at once. I'm not sure exactly why they haven't fixed this yet (annoying, I know), but it happens every year. Finish your registration at least three days before the August 27 deadline. Don't wait for the weekend. Do it on a weekday night when the server traffic is lower.

What to expect in terms of salary and profile
A junior associate is the face of the bank. You'll be handling cash counters, interacting with customers, opening accounts, resolving passbook issues, and pushing banking products like insurance or mutual funds. It's a demanding job, but it has good security and nice perks. Don't expect to just sit in a corner and tally numbers. You'll be dealing with the public every single day.
The starting basic pay is INR 19,900. But with allowances like Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, transport allowance and others, your total starting salary in a metro city like Mumbai or Delhi will be around INR 37,000 to INR 40,000 per month. In smaller towns, the HRA is lower. So the total salary will be slightly less.
You also get medical benefits for yourself and your dependents, provident fund, pension under the New Pension Scheme, and leave travel concession. Plus you can get loans at concessional interest rates. In my experience, this is a massive financial advantage when buying a house or a car.

The competition will be intense, even for backlog posts. Because the vacancies are limited to 1,538 across India, the cut-offs will be high. Start preparing now. Take mock tests, revise your basics, and stay updated with current affairs. Focus heavily on your weak areas during the first week. Then shift entirely to practice papers. Good luck with your application. Go get that job.
