Look, filling out government forms online is nobody's idea of a good time. The websites are slow. The servers crash right when you hit submit. And I won't even start on the Aadhaar OTP delays. But if you're a student in Uttar Pradesh, the UP Scholarship 2026 is free money for your education. It's absolutely worth the headache, I think.
The Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department opened the registration window for the 2026-27 academic session on August 11. Applications are live for Classes 9 to 12 right now. You have until September 21 for fresh applications. Honestly, do it now. If you wait until September, the portal at scholarship.up.gov.in is going to crash. It happens every single year. Students are left panicking on the last day (which makes sense, actually). And you really don't want to be in that mess.
So grab a cup of chai and get your documents ready. Let's walk through this step-by-step. I'll show you how to register and what mistakes to avoid. I'll also show you how to check your status later. That way you aren't left wondering where your money is.
Who is actually eligible for this scholarship?
Before you spend an hour fighting with the website, make sure you actually qualify. The government divides this into two main buckets based on your grade level. Both have slightly different rules. But the core financial requirements are similar. In my experience, people get confused here for no reason.
Pre-matric (classes 9 and 10)
This is for students in Class 9 or 10 in any recognized UP school. Your family's total annual income can't cross ₹2.5 lakh from all sources. This means combining the income of both your parents. If you fall under SC, ST, General, OBC, or Minority categories, you can apply. You just need the right certificates. For minority students, there are specific quotas. Having your documentation perfect is non-negotiable.
Post-matric (classes 11 and 12)
The basic financial rules are the same here. You need to be in Class 11 or 12. The income limit is exactly the same at ₹2.5 lakh per year. Just remember that if you failed the previous year, you won't get the money. You have to pass your last exam and get promoted. Dropouts or students repeating a year aren't usually eligible for the fresh application cycle. I'm not sure exactly why the rules are so rigid on this. There are sometimes exceptions for medical reasons, but they need heavy documentation.
The documents you need (get these ready first)
Don't sit down at the computer without these files. The session will time out while you're searching for a piece of paper. Then you'll have to start all over again. In my experience, the timeout window is aggressive.
- Your Aadhaar card. This is the absolute center of the process. Your mobile number MUST be linked to your Aadhaar for the OTP. If it is not, go to an Aadhaar center today and get it fixed. Don't wait.
- Your income certificate. Needs to be recent. Certificates older than three years are usually rejected. It must be issued by a competent authority like a Tehsildar. Keep the certificate number handy.
- Your caste certificate. If you are applying under SC, ST, or OBC categories, you need a valid digital caste certificate. Keep the certificate number and application number ready.
- Your bank passbook. The bank account must be in your name, and it must be seeded with your Aadhaar. If the money cannot route through the Aadhaar Payment Bridge (APB), the transaction will fail. Joint accounts with parents sometimes cause issues, so a dedicated student account is better.
- Your previous year marksheet. To prove you passed your last class. You will need to enter your total marks and obtained marks.
- Your fee receipt. The receipt from your current school year showing you paid your admission or tuition fees. You need the receipt number and the date of payment.
- A passport size photo. Scanned in JPG format and kept under 20KB in size. Use an online compressor if your phone photo is too big.
- A DigiLocker account. You need this for document verification. Set it up on your phone beforehand and link your Aadhaar to it.
Important Callout: Never pay any agent or cyber cafe operator who promises to get your scholarship approved. The approval process is handled entirely by the District Scholarship Committee based on your submitted documents. Nobody can fast-track it for a fee.
Step-by-step guide for UP Scholarship 2026 registration
Alright, let's get into the weeds. The process is entirely online. Don't pay some random cyber cafe guy ₹500 to do this unless you really have to. You can absolutely do it yourself on a smartphone or a laptop if you follow instructions.
Step 1: The initial registration
First, you need to create an account on the portal. This is how you get your unique registration number.
- Open your browser and go to the official website.
- Look at the top menu and click on the 'Student' section. A drop-down will appear.
- Click on the 'Registration' option.
- You will see different boxes for different categories like SC/ST/General, OBC, and Minority. Click on the 'Fresh Registration' link for your specific category and class. Do not click renewal unless you got the scholarship last year.
- Fill in the basic details. Select the district where your school is located, not your home district if they are different. Select your educational institution from the list.
- Enter your name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card. Enter your mobile number, and create a strong password you will not forget.
- Hit submit. You will get a registration number on the screen. Write this down immediately. Take a screenshot. Email it to yourself. Do whatever you have to do to not lose this number.

Step 2: DigiLocker verification
This step is relatively new, and it trips a lot of people up. The government uses this system to fetch your verified documents directly. That way you can't submit fake ones.
- Go back to the homepage, click on 'Student', and this time choose 'Fresh Login'. Choose your category.
- Log in with your registration number, the mobile number you just used, and the password you created.
- The first thing it will ask you to do is verify via DigiLocker. Click on the big verification button.
- You will be redirected to the official login page. Enter your Aadhaar number or the mobile number linked to your account.
- Enter the OTP sent to your phone.
- A consent screen will appear. Allow the UP Scholarship portal to access your documents. This pulls your basic details directly so you do not have to type them manually.
Step 3: Filling the main application form
Now comes the long part. Take a deep breath. Have all your papers sitting right next to you.
- Click on 'Fill Application Form' on your dashboard menu on the left side.
- You will see sections for Personal Details, Academic Details, and Bank Details. Go through them one by one.
- Fill out your past exam scores. Be honest here because they check this against board data. Enter your current class details, your school enrollment number, and the date you took admission this year.
- For the bank details section, be incredibly careful. Select your bank name, the branch, and then enter the account number. Enter the IFSC code exactly as it appears on your passbook. One wrong digit and the money goes to someone else or bounces back.
- Upload your scanned passport photograph in the photo section. Make sure the file is under the size limit.
- Click 'Update' or 'Save' at the bottom of the page.
If you get stuck here and someone sends you a link claiming they can bypass the form for you, it's a fraud. If you want to know how to spot fake websites, read our scam alerts section so you don't get fooled.
Step 4: Aadhaar authentication
I know we already verified documents. But the government loves extra layers of security. They require a direct UIDAI ping.
- On the main dashboard, click on the option for Aadhaar Authentication.
- Enter your Aadhaar number twice in the boxes provided to confirm you have not made a typo.
- Click on the verify button.
- You will get another OTP on your phone. Enter it. If the UIDAI server is down, which happens often, you might have to try this step late at night or early in the morning. I tried helping my cousin with this last year, and we had to sit there at 2 AM to finally get the OTP to come through. Just keep trying.
Step 5: Final printout and physical submission
Don't skip this part. Your online application means absolutely nothing if your school doesn't physically verify it. They have to forward it to the district office.
- Click on 'Print for Verification' on your dashboard. This generates a draft copy of your form.
- Take a break. Have some water. Now read every single line of that printed draft. Check the spelling of your name, your bank account number, your income certificate number, and your caste category. Compare it directly with your physical papers.
- If everything is perfect and you find zero mistakes, go back to the portal and click the final submit button. Once you click this button, the form is locked. You cannot change a single comma after this.
- Wait three days. Yes, really, you have to wait three working days for the system to process it.
- Log in again after the waiting period and print the final application.
- Take this final printout. Attach clear photocopies of all your required documents like your income certificate, caste certificate, bank passbook front page, Aadhaar card, previous marksheet, and fee receipt.
- Sign the form where required, get your parents to sign if needed, and submit this physical bundle to your school's scholarship nodal officer or principal's office before the deadline.

How to check your UP Scholarship status
Okay, so you submitted the form to your school. Now what? You wait. The government machinery moves slowly. Status tracking becomes active a few months after the registration window closes. This is usually around November or December.
When you want to check what's happening with your money, follow these steps.
- Go to the official portal.
- Click on the 'Status' tab in the main menu bar.
- Select the application year.
- Enter your registration number and your date of birth.
- Click search.
The screen will generate a status report. This shows exactly where your file is stuck. It usually goes through several stages. First is Forwarded by Institute, meaning your school did their job. Then Verified by Bank, meaning your account is valid. Next is Pending at District Scholarship Committee. Finally, it's Verified or Recommended by District Committee.
If the status says Rejected by Bank, it almost always means your Aadhaar mapping failed. Or your account is dormant. If you see this, you need to rush to your bank branch immediately. Submit an NPCI linking form and complete your KYC again. Don't wait for them to call you, because they won't.
A quick warning about UP Scholarship scams
Whenever scholarship season starts and money is on the line, the scammers come out in full force. You might get a random WhatsApp message or an SMS saying your scholarship is approved. Then they tell you to click a link to claim your amount.
This is a phishing scam. The scammers create a fake portal that looks exactly like a banking app or government site. Once you click the link, they ask for your bank details or tell you to enter your UPI PIN. The government will never send you a random link to claim money. The scholarship amount is sent directly to your bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). You don't have to claim it or enter your UPI PIN anywhere. If a message asks you to pay a ₹50 processing fee or wants you to scan a QR code, it's a scam. If you ask me, these scams are getting out of hand (annoying, I know). But just stay away from random links.
If you encounter this scam, take a screenshot. Report the fraud at the national portal cybercrime.gov.in or by calling the 1930 cyber helpline immediately. Stay vigilant and tell your classmates about this too.
Don't procrastinate
I can't stress this enough. The September 21 deadline for fresh applications from Class 9 and 11 might seem far away right now. But the technical glitches on the NIC servers are legendary. Get your income and caste certificates sorted this week if you don't have them. Finish the online registration by the first week of September.
The UP scholarship is a massive financial help for thousands of families managing rising school fees. A little bit of patience with a clunky government website is a small price to pay. Just keep trying if the server times out. Double-check your bank numbers like your life depends on it, and get that hard copy to your school on time.
